Daily Devotional:Our Only Goal

By Jerry Sweat on June 12, 2012

Opening your life to God’s Word on a consistent basis over a long period of time will slowly but surely begin to shape your thoughts, perspective, attitudes, and actions. You will start out just reading God’s Word and it will eventually begin to read you! God’s truth will challenge you and help you to see as God sees! Watch how God’s perspective will begin to influence you in ways you never imagined! Stick with the plan! Open your heart to God and He will transform you from the inside out!

In His Love,
Pastor Jerry

Bible Verse

So when they met together, they asked him, "Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?"  He said to them: "It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." Acts 1: 6-8

All through history, there was this thought that the Messiah would somehow bring a political kingdom that would allow the people of God (Israel) to rule and reign over the earth.  Jesus came seeking to teach a different kind of Kingdom…..one that was not about a changed political system but a changed heart.  This revolution of the heart would bring God’s rule and reign (the Kingdom of God) into the whole world………one life at a time.  Luke tells us in Acts 1 that Jesus spent 40 days giving His disciples a refresher course of this new Kingdom of forgiveness, a new future, and a new eternity.  He must have been amazed that after three years of teaching, His crucifixion and death, being raised from the dead, and teaching on the Kingdom for 40 days that His disciples still did not get it!  And so, He simply says this:  Hey listen….here is the last thing…the thing I want you to do:  Just go out and make me public!  Just go out and through your words and actions, point people to me.  I’ll take care of the rest!  Just like those early disciples, I’m a little slow.  I don’t always get God.  Even when He makes it very clear, I have a tendency to make it confusing.  That’s why Jesus says to me and to you:  Just point people to me.  I’ll take care of the rest!  You see, I’m not the “good news” anyway…..neither are you!  We are simply ones for whom Christ died….ones who have experienced His grace….we have seen how our lives are different because of His touch.  Our only goal………when everything is said and done…..is to point people to Jesus.  He will take care of the rest.

Okay…….so you don’t live the perfect life!  Neither do I!  So you don’t understand everything about God and maybe you don’t have the Bible memorized!  Neither do I!  Here is what we can do!  To the very best of our ability and with God’s help, we are called, thru words and actions,  to point people to Jesus……be His witnesses….first in our homes, neighborhoods, workplaces, schools and also to the places we travel in our country and in Costa Rica, Jamaica, Panama, and Africa………to the ends of the earth!  Just point people to the only real hope…the only real Savior, the only life-changing “good news”- Jesus Christ…..He will take care of the rest!  As you go into your world today, just remember that the eternity of others is not dependent on your understanding all the mysteries of God or in living the perfect life.  The future and eternity of others is based on your willingness to point people to Jesus.

Jesus, the answer for the world is not a political system or my capacity to “get” everything there is to “get” about You!  You are the answer!  You are our only Savior!  By Your strength, allow me through my words and actions to be Your witness….to point people to You!  Amen.
