Daily Devotional:As You Go

By Jerry Sweat on June 06, 2012

Opening your life to God’s Word on a consistent basis over a long period of time will slowly but surely begin to shape your thoughts, perspective, attitudes, and actions. You will start out just reading God’s Word and it will eventually begin to read you! God’s truth will challenge you and help you to see as God sees! Watch how God’s perspective will begin to influence you in ways you never imagined! Stick with the plan! Open your heart to God and He will transform you from the inside out!

In His Love,
Pastor Jerry

Bible Verse

Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Matthew 28: 16-20

Observation

Two very significant truths jump off the page at me when I re-read what is known traditionally as Jesus’ Great Commission.  First of all, after all Jesus died to pave the way for others to be saved, He actually handed off His mission to reach the world to a bunch of guys who did not even stand with Him in His final hours of trial and crucifixion. They were just a bunch of teenagers….totally left out by the religious authorities of their day. They were the Savior’s plan “A” to reach the world.  The second truth is in the rendering of the phrase: “Go into all the world and make disciples”.  In the sentence structure of the Greek, it literally means:  “As you go into all nations…..make disciples.  In other words, in every area of your life…..always be seeking to help others become my disciples.  After getting over the initial shock, it is imperative that we consider the maximum trust that the Savior, who took on our punishment to make a way for us to be saved, is offering to us when He gives us this mission to complete.  Second, the commissioning is not only about making sure that people are reached in every nation, it is about making disciples everywhere you go in life!

Application

First, you don’t have to be a perfect person or have all the questions answered to lead people to Jesus.  Just like those first disciples, you are a life under construction with Jesus.  Don’t allow your limitations to keep you from living out this sacred trust.  And second, everywhere you go today is your mission field!  Reaching people for Christ is not a program in your church nor is it just about taking a mission trip to reach people in distant lands.  It is this awareness that you and I take into every day of our lives and in every situation:  “As you go, make disciples.”  Making disciples happens in your home, your workplace, at school, while waiting for your child at T-ball practice, and at the Rotary Club.   It happens in every word you speak and every action you take.  It happens in your attitudes and the way you relate to every person.  Jesus is with you and seeking to use your imperfect life and mine to touch the lives of others with the love and good news of Christ.  Every relationship becomes an opportunity to in some way point others to the only hope we have, the only name by which we must be saved.  Leading others to Christ is a sacred trust you are given.  Be trustworthy!  Use your one and only God-given life to influence the lives of others for the sake of eternity!

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank you for the sacred trust You have placed in my hands.  By the power of Your Holy Spirit, help me to be keenly aware of the possibilities all around me today to lead people in my path of influence toward You.  Amen.
